Der »Legenda Aurea« zufolge lebte Maria Magdalena die letzten dreißig Jahre ihres Lebens als Büßerin in einer Höhle in Südfrankreich. Um 1630 entstand der seither gebräuchliche Typus der Vanitas-Meditation: das Bild der reuigen Sünderin in einer Höhle bei Wasser und Brot. Totenkopf und Kreuz symbolisieren Tod und Auferstehung in der Darstellung.
